6 OVERLOOKED DIY MOVING DETAILS

Choosing to complete a do-it-yourself move is a smart decision, one that will typically save you a lot of money. A DIY move requires more planning and involvement on your part, however, and there are often important details that are overlooked. We want you to have a great DIY moving experience which is why we've outlined the most common DIY moving pitfalls.

NO FURNITURE BLANKETS

Furniture padding is perhaps the most commonly overlooked detail on moving day. It also happens to be one of the most important. If you want your furniture to arrive at your new home without being damaged you will need furniture padding. A general estimate is one dozen pads per 5' of space. However, this estimate should be adjusted to fit your needs.

DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE?

Neither rental truck or portable storage container companies provide an on-site estimate to determine how much space you need. These companies have methods of estimating your needs, both online and by phone, but their estimates aren't always correct. Whenever possible always defer to more space than you think you need.

YOU FORGOT ROPE AND TIE DOWNS

Tie downs and rope go a long way in making sure your household goods are secure. This is especially true if you didn't hire professional loading help and opted to load your items on your own.

YOUR USED MOVING BOXES ARE TOO 'USED'

We're a very green company and we always encourage our customers to utilize used moving boxes. However, there is a point when boxes become overused and will do little to protect your items. This is apparent when the structure of the box is worn to the point where it doesn't provide a sufficient foundation.

YOUR ELEVATOR MUST BE RESERVED

Apartments, notably high rises, will often require you to reserve the elevator on moving day. Another commonly overlooked detail: Many luxury high rises will require a certificate of insurance (COI) from the movers listing the property as additional insured. This process usually takes a few days and will likely have a fee associated with it. Be sure to check with your building well before moving day about their requirements.

YOU CAN'T PARK THERE

Moving to a big city? Chances are you will be required to obtain a parking permit for your rental truck, trailer or storage container. Be sure to find out if your city requires one and file the application well before moving day.
